Today Google posted an official response regarding the New Orleans satellite images (see earlier post). Here's the link: Official Google Blog: About the New Orleans imagery in Google Maps and Earth.
It's a good explanation of what happened, and to their credit they've quickly updated their database so it now has post-Katrina images from 2006. What's missing from the response is any indication that they'll be more open in the future about their data, or that they'll try to prevent situations like this from happening again.
They "recognize the increasingly important role that imagery is coming to play in the public discourse" and so they acted quickly to answer the "surprising" comments coming from congress. That's great, but will it require a congressional inquiry for them to think about issues like this again?
