Progress continues apace:
- Microsoft's new Windows Live Local Virtual Earth lets you drive your virtual car around downtown San Francisco or Seattle, which Microsoft has photographed exhaustively by trawling a multi-camera-equipped SUV through the areas. Hey, isn't that you coming out of that porn shop? (Via Michael Zimmer.) Amazon's A9 has previously tried street-level maps, but they discontinued the project in October (ResourceShelf).
- Did you make the list of Top 10 naked people on Google Earth? Don't worry -- the satellite photos don't have high enough resolution to show much. Give it a few months (see xRez Extreme Resolution Photography).
- Yahoo and Reuters are jumping on the citizen journalism bandwagon and asking for your camera phone photos. Now's your chance to get your annoying neighbor into trouble. (SF Chronicle: Yahoo, Reuters Solicit Photos.)
- Students with video cameras/phones are keeping teachers in line. Lose your temper and you could find yourself on YouTube. (NYT: Telling Tales Out of School, on YouTube.)
- Lauren Weinstein explains how to tell if your cellphone is bugged.
- The perfect gift for that ex you're stalking: the Nike + iPod Sport Kit. While intended to track your workout, researchers at the University of Washington have shown that the device can easily be hacked and used by others to track your movements (Wired News: Nike + IPod = Surveillance).
